Soap film bursting : surfactant dynamic and aureole

While studying soap film bursting to validate their opening velocity, i.e. the Taylor-Culick velocity, Mysels and coworkers discovered fifty years ago a compression region propagating in front of the hole which they called the aureole. This Marangoni flow results from the rapid surfactant compression and leads to a film thickening in front of the hole. Their pioneer theory postulates that surfactants remain at the interface, insolubility, leading to a self similar process which was verify on small films. In this talk we will show that surfactants composing the aureole indeed behave as insoluble at first but then aureole front slows down and deviates from the self similar theory. We will demonstrate that such deviation arises from the balance between the rapid compression and the surfactant desorption flux. By modeling this balance we will show that physico-chemical parameters can be extracted paving the way toward high frequency interface rheology.
